If people are online, why is democracy still offline in the age of AI?

South Africans are often blamed for disengaging from civic life, especially young people. But the problem may lie less with citizens and more with systems that no longer fit how people live, work, and communicate. This piece argues that AI, if used deliberately and responsibly, could help redesign civic participation to be more accessible, inclusive, and rooted in everyday life rather than outdated formats.
