For CSOs in South Africa already stretched by funding constraints, shrinking staff, disinformation threats and endless reporting cycles, the idea that the solution to digital overload is simply “less tech” feels increasingly unrealistic.

The real question is no longer whether civil society should be online. It is how to survive, and even thrive, in an ecosystem shaped by artificial intelligence.

South Africa is one of Africa’s most AI-ready countries, ranking 2nd in Sub-Saharan Africa on the Government AI Readiness Index. Around 52.91 readiness score places it among the continent’s leaders in AI policy, skills and infrastructure.

Across South Africa, activists, researchers and nonprofit practitioners are quietly shifting the conversation from screen-time limits to something more ambitious: AI-assisted digital balance using AI not as another source of overload, but as a tool to reclaim time, strengthen democracy and build resilience.

Anyone who has worked in a nonprofit knows the paradox: technology promised efficiency, but many teams feel more overwhelmed than ever. Meanwhile, the digital threat landscape has intensified.

The Legal Resources Centre’s Democratising Big Tech project warns that misinformation and algorithmic discrimination disproportionately affect marginalised communities and can translate into real-world harm, including violence and reduced trust in elections.

The result is a perfect storm: rising digital threats, limited staff capacity and increasing expectations to be constantly online.

This is where AI enters the story — not as a replacement for human work, but as a potential capacity multiplier.

Large language models are increasingly used to summarise research, draft proposal outlines, translate materials, and generate monitoring and evaluation frameworks.

What once took weeks can now take hours — allowing teams to focus on programme work rather than paperwork.

AI-assisted research tools can scan hundreds of documents in minutes, helping organisations track legislative changes, identify emerging risks and map stakeholder networks.

This is particularly valuable in advocacy environments where timing is everything.

South Africa’s 11 official languages also present a persistent accessibility challenge; AI-assisted translation is already helping organisations communicate across linguistic barriers more quickly and affordably.

The opportunity is simple but powerful: AI can give time back to civil society.

Case study: Using AI to counter misinformation

The use of AI in combating misinformation is no longer theoretical. During the 2024 election cycle, South African researchers and civic initiatives tested digital dialogue interventions designed to reduce misinformation spread online.

Findings from the Policy Innovation Lab, through the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking at Stellenbosch University, show that AI-assisted moderation and early-warning monitoring systems can identify harmful narratives before they spread widely.

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) has also advocated for AI-supported fact-checking pipelines and platform accountability. The organisation’s Real411 platform enables citizens to report harmful online content and election misinformation, demonstrating how civic tech can strengthen democratic participation.

These examples illustrate a shift from reactive crisis response to proactive preparedness. AI allows civil society to detect risks earlier, respond faster and scale interventions across languages and platforms.

Digital activism and grassroots initiatives meet AI

Across Africa, digital activism is increasingly intersecting with artificial intelligence, creating new pathways for civic engagement and rights advocacy.

As digital access expands, the continent has become a contested space where governments introduce restrictive online laws — from Nigeria’s Social Media Bill to Uganda’s Computer Misuse Act — while civil society pushes back through coordinated advocacy and public mobilisation. Organisations such as Paradigm Initiative, Internet Sans Frontières and the Africa Digital Rights Hub are at the forefront of campaigns promoting privacy, platform accountability and inclusive digital policy.

At the same time, legal frameworks like the African Union’s Malabo Convention and South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) are shaping a stronger governance environment for responsible technology use.

AI is increasingly supporting these movements. Youth-led campaigns such as #EndSARS in Nigeria, #ShutItAllDown in Namibia and #FixTheCountry in Ghana have demonstrated how digital platforms can mobilise mass participation; today, activists are adding AI tools to analyse online narratives, detect coordinated harassment and amplify credible information.

With more than 70% of Africa’s population under 30, civic tech communities are building datasets, monitoring tools and open-source projects that challenge algorithmic bias and improve representation.

These efforts signal a shift: AI is not only a technological development but a growing instrument for grassroots accountability, enabling African civil society to shape more ethical and inclusive digital futures.

Ethical AI and the risk of bias

While AI offers powerful opportunities, it also introduces new risks. Mozilla’s State of AI in Africa research emphasises that AI systems trained primarily on Global North data risk reproducing existing inequalities and biases.

Without inclusive datasets and oversight, AI tools may underperform in African languages or misrepresent local contexts.

Ethical governance is therefore central to resilience. For CSOs, this means developing internal policies on data protection, transparency and human oversight. It also means asking difficult questions about who designs AI systems, whose data trains them and who benefits from their deployment.

AI adoption requires a balanced approach. Civil society organisations must critically assess both opportunities and threats:
